Why Safety Programs Do Not Work?
• Safety is a priority, not a value!
• Safety is not managed in the same manner as production, quality, and cost issues!
• Safety is not driven through continuous improvement!
Core Elements in the Safety Program
• A culture that says “safety” is important around here.
• A tight accountability system.
Safety in the Workplace is the Combination of the Following Three Measurable
Components
• The person component that consists of employees’ physical capabilities, experience, and training.
• The work environment component that represents engineering controls, equipment, job task, and
the work culture.
• The final and most often looked component is values and behavior.
Causes of Industrial Accidents
There are many studies regarding the causes of the accidents. In one of the studies, it was
revealed that 80-90% of accidents are caused by personal factors. About 15-30% of the workforce is
seriously handicapped by emotional problems and that is deemed as responsible for the cause of
approximately 20-30% of worker’s absenteeism. At least 65% and possibly as much as 90% of people
hired by industry were dropped from their jobs because of personal factors rather than technical
problems.
