Beat the Heat, Protect Your Workers from Heat Stress
Heavy physical work in hot and humid environments can cause heat stress that can result in heat
stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rashes. Workers at risk of heat stress include outdoor
workers and workers in hot environments: linemen, construction workers, fire fighters, bakers, farmers,
miners, traffic enforcers, postmen, delivery workers and others.
Acclimate Workers
1. Gradually increase time spent in hot environments over a 7-14 day period.
2. For NEW WORKERS, the schedule should not be more than 20% exposure to heat on day 1 and
an increase of no more than 20% exposure on each additional day.
3. For WORKERS WITH PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE with the job, acclimatization period should be
no more than 50% on day 1, 60% on day 2, 80% on day 3, and 100% exposure on day 4.
Factors to be considered
• Age
• General condition of the employee
• Specific medical problems or pre-existing conditions of the individual
• Length and degree of exposure
• How long the individual was exposed
Exposures may result to
• Frostbite
• Destruction of body tissue
• Cramps
• Heat stroke
• Death
