31 Module 3: Environmental Health in Industry Loss Control Management (LCM)
It refers to the maximum concentration of an air contaminant to which a person can be safely
exposed for an 8-hour period per workday, over a normal work life. Threshold Limit Value (TLV) are
expressed in terms of P.P.M. (parts per million), mg/m (milligrams per cubic meter), or Mppcf (million
3
particles per cubic foot) – which are measurements of concentration of air contaminants.
Methods for Controlling the Hazards Presented by Air
Pollutants
• Substitution or Replacement
• Elimination or Reduction of Employee Exposure
• Change of Process or Operations
• Local Exhausts
• Ventilation
• Wetting Down Methods
• Housekeeping
• Personal Protective Equipment
2. Skin Irritants
Some irritants are caused by:
• Temperature of extremes
• Sunlight
• Friction
• Abrasion
• Bacteria
• Parasites
• Poison ivy
• Radiation
Note: prime offenders of the above conditions are
mainly acids and solvents
Methods to Prevent and Control Industrial Skin Diseases
• Substitution
