32 Module 3: Environmental Health in Industry Loss Control Management (LCM)
• Pre-employment Consideration
3. Noise
Noise or the unwanted sounds. There are two things to be considered:
• The sound level pressure (dB) of the noise.
• The length of exposure.
General Indication of Potential Noise Problems
• A noticeable, though temporary, loss of hearing after leaving an area of
noise where an extended period of exposure existed.
• Employee complaints of headaches, or a “ringing of ears”, during or after
the workday.
• Difficulty in verbal communication in an area. Employees must shout at
close distance to be heard or understood.
• Accidents that occur because some warning of impending hazard could
not be heard.
• Any discussion or complaints related to some degree of hearing loss. Employees may
frequently refer to such loss, in a joking manners, as evidence of aging.
Basic Method of Controlling Noise
• Reduction of noise at its source (e.g. proper maintenance and lubrication, use of mufflers,
and substitution of a less noisy process)
• Reduction of noise transmission (e.g. padding or spring suspension, enclosures or bafflers,
and provision of “quiet rooms”
• Reduction of noise reception (e.g. use of ear plugs or ear muffs)
