Module 11: Personal and Group Communication
Communication
It’s nearly impossible to go through a day without the use of communication. Communication is
the sharing of information and/or ideas with others and being understood by them. It is a two way process
of sending and receiving words, actions, symbols, signs, etc. Communication is what we do to give and
get understanding. The person sending the message is referred to as the sender, while the person
receiving is called as the receiver.
Basic Elements of Communication
• Sender – the communication process begins with the sender (source). The sender has some
kind of information – a command, request, or idea – that he or she wants to share with others. In
order for that message to be received, the sender must first encode the message in a form that
can be understood and then transmit it.
• Message – it is the information that the sender wants to relay to the receiver or relayed between
the parties.
• Receiver – it is the person to whom a message is directed to. In order to comprehend the
information from the receiver, the receiver must first be able to receive the sender’s information
and then decode or interpret it. Put all these three together and you have the communication
process at its most basic.
