Role of the Safety and Health Professional
In a small medium size company, he may be selected to be a PSM
program coordinator or auditor. However, as company product line
increases, management may designate the head of the engineering
department for this assignment, appointing the SHP as an
assistant.
The Safety and Health Professional evaluates the person’s
performance to determine if he or she is, in fact, adequately
contributing to the PSM program. In addition, members of the safety
and health department can provide safety surveillance in production areas to help prevent accidents.
Who are involved in PSM Program?
Answer: Virtually ALL DEPARTMENT
But following play more significant roles.
• Primary Engineering
• Manufacturing Service
• Legal
• Marketing
• Purchasing
• Human Resources
• Insurance
• Public Relations
Role of the Engineering or Design Department
• Evaluate product hazards prior to production.
• Formally assigned evaluator in this evaluator.
• Had a formal written or prepared design review procedure.
INSTRUCTION MANUALS
1. ACCOMPANYING THE PRODUCT – should respect hazard warning and show how the hazards
can be reduced or avoided.
2. IN ADITION – the manual should instruct consumers on how to inspect the product upon receipt
and how to assemble, install and inspect it periodically.
