133  Module 17: Off-the-Job Safety                                                          Loss Control Management (LCM)


               Select Program Details

                   •   A good topic breakdown provides a solid
                       structural framework around which off-the-job
                       safety program content can be developed. For
                       example, content may be based on seasonal
                       hazards, on home, traffic, and public accidents, or
                       according to accident types and causes.
                   •   A seasonal emphasis outline might include:
                          •   Weekends – god housekeeping, lawn mowers, garden tools, do-it-yourself activities,

                              pruning/planting trees, plowing, bicycles;
                          •   Summer - sunburn, swimming, camping, boating, hiking, field sports, fishing, poison ivy,
                              insects, vacation hazards;
                          •   Vacation time - home power tools, back-to-school hazards, yard cleanup, repair-storage
                              of tools; and

                          •   Holiday - sports, home, heating equipment,  holiday safety, Weather exposure, over
                              exertion, driving safety
                   •   Topics can tie in to program of national scope interest. These
                       national programs provide radio, TV, newspaper, and other
                       forms of publicity that help promote your program content.
                       National Heart Month (February), Back-To-School Safety
                       (June), National Fire Prevention (March).


               Employee, Family and Community Involvement
                   •   The assistance of a special off-the-job safety group
                       may be valuable. Membership in this group can
                       include employees, family members of employees,
                       local civic, schools, or community persons with an
                       interest or role in safety in general;

                   •   Every community has special interest groups and
                       organizations already concerned with various phases
                       of off-the-job safety and that will lend their resources
                       and personnel to assist in company activities.

                   •   Among such groups are: the local safety council;
                       Chamber of Commerce; Service Clubs; Red Cross
                       Chapters; Local Papers; Radio and TV stations; Health, Police, and Fire Departments; Parent-
                       Teacher Associations; Rescue Squads; Emergency Service Groups;

                   •   A representative from the volunteer sector of the ASPPI can come to an organization and present
                       an off-the-job safety program to its members or employees.

                   •   Assistance can also be obtained from: DOLE-BWC ; Medical, Visiting Nurse, and other
                       associations; Poison Control Centers; Local Police; Insurance Companies; and Public Health
                       Groups;
