4. Environmental Stressor
These are stressors that are found in the environment and surroundings. Everyday life is
full of environmental stressors that cause minor irritation. The following are the most common
environmental stressor:
• Noise
• Crowding
• Air Quality
• Colors
• Tornadoes and other natural disasters
• Light
• Insects
• Extreme temperatures
Characteristics of Stressors
1. Negative Event – marital conflict, separation, job loss
2. Positive Event – getting married, having a baby
3. External Event – flat tire, being promoted
4. Internal Stimuli – anticipation of an evet, thoughts/fears of an expected surgery, retirement, visit
of in-laws
5. Occasional Big Stressors – easily recognized & dealt with
6. Numerous Chronic “Small” Stressors – often go unnoticed but eventually takes its toll
7. Cumulative Effect – the more things you have to deal with at once, the more demand is placed
on you to adjust or adopt.
8. Conscious or Unconscious
9. Individualized – for every one there is a certain limit to just how much a person can handle at a
time.
Variables Which Moderates the Experience of Stress
1. Type-Severity-Frequency of Stressor – usual stressors catastrophic events, single or
continuous
2. Perceptions – people react to their perception of reality rather than reality itself
3. Experience – uncertainty and newness of situations create stress-gained experience significantly
reduce stress
4. Social Support – buffers the impact of stress.
